On Nantucket - Inn-Sights

The most popular feature of Nantucket in summer is, of course, the incredible island beaches. Whether you want an uncrowded, secluded, private beach or one more suited to younger lifestyles, the island has them all.

The best way to see the island is by bike. Although the Barnacle does have limited on site jeep parking, a bike ride to the beach or anywhere on the island is a fun, scenic, and healthful way to go. Bike rentals are easily found on Steamboat or Straight wharf. The town beaches are minutes away and easily within walking distance, as are the bus stops for public transportation.

Restaurants are minutes away down Fair to Main street. No car is needed when you walk to a shore dinner at Sayle's Seafoods or a gourmet dining experience at Straight Wharf. Also consider just dining on the beach at sunset with a picnic from Provisions. The western sky lights up almost every evening at dusk with incredible pinks and reds.

Harbor kayak , windsurfer, sailboat & motor boat rentals are within walking distance as well, and affords another healthy and exciting way to see the island waters. The Coatue wildlife refuge has nesting terns, gulls, and many other ocean birds and can easily be reached by kayak. Also available and close by are sunset sailing cruises that set out from Straight Wharf. The charter fishing boat fleet ties up in the same anchorage if striped bass or bluefishing is on your agenda.

The museums are fascinating and are well worth the few hours spent indoors to immerse yourself in the island's whaling and Quaker history. The old Quaker Meeting House is just 2 buildings from the Barnacle. The Whaling Museum is just off Steamboat wharf, and the Lightship Basket Museum is just a short walk. Our personal favorite is the Lifesaving and Shipwreck Museum out on Polpis road. The bike ride out is breathtaking and the lore of the old lifesaving stations is extraordinary.
